ACWWA Water Conservation Tips

In the Home:

1.      Install low-flow shower heads and toilets (Save 1 to 5 gallons per minute).
2.      Turn off the running water when brushing teeth (Save 1 to 5 gallons per minute).
3.      Take shorter showers. Depending on your shower head you can save 2 to 8 gallons of water per minute.
4.      Fix that leaky faucet. Leaky faucets can waste up to 2,700 gallons of water per year.
5.      Waiting for that water to warm up? Save that water in a container and use it somewhere else, such as house plants, flower beds, trees, or pet drinking water.
6.      Get that running toilet fixed! A running toilet can use as much as 30 to 500 gallons per day depending on its leaking condition.
7.      Use energy and water efficient appliances.
8.      Don’t use your toilet for a trash can. If you have trash, dispose of it in the wastebasket instead of flushing it down.
9.      Wash only full loads of clothes.
10. Teach water and energy conservation to everyone in your family.

      Outside the Home:

  1. Adjust your sprinkler system to prevent watering the driveway or sidewalk.
  2. Use water friendly landscaping. There are several types of plants and grass that requires less water than others. Ask your local nursery.
  3. Lawn aeration helps increase water infiltration in your soil and promotes healthy growth.
  4. Don’t cut your grass to short. Longer grass helps retain moisture.
  5. Don’t wash away grass and debris from your driveway and walkways. Use a broom to sweep them up, and dispose of them in the trash can.
  6. Water before 10:00 AM and after 6:00 PM.
  7. Use commercial car washes instead of washing your car at home.
  8.  If you wash your car at home use an auto-shutoff nozzle on your hose.
